What is Abdominoplasty?

With the physical and hormonal effects that make the abdominal skin lose its elasticity, such as rapid weight gain and loss and pregnancy, relaxation and sagging of the abdominal skin are observed. These deformations are accompanied by a decrease in the quality of the abdominal skin and cracks.

Tummy tuck surgery has been a frequently used method for solving these problems for years. The aim is not only to get rid of the piece of skin, but also to give shape to the body. Liposuction is also a helper in this surgery. However, since vascular and nerve structures will be damaged in the classical liposuction method, it is not possible to work easily in every body region if it will be performed together with tummy tuck. As a result, a more limited liposuction was used as it was feared that the vessels feeding the skin would be damaged.

Abdominoplasty Methods

There are two different methods, mini abdominoplasty and full abdominoplasty. The most appropriate method is preferred according to the degree and size of the problem in the abdomen, the condition of the skin and the patient.

Full Abdominoplasty

If the current sagging problem is located in the upper part of the belly button and the distance between the muscles is high, the full tummy tuck method is preferred. The procedure is performed by making vertical incisions between the navel and the groin, and in some cases horizontal incisions. Problems are eliminated by removing sagging, cracking, excess fat and skin tissue above and below the belly button and stretching the area. The abdominal muscles are compressed, and the upper abdominal tissue is stretched and sutured. General anesthesia is applied in the procedure and takes 3-4 hours.

Mini Abdominoplasty

If the deterioration in the abdomen is below the navel, if the sagging, loosening, and cracks are mild, and if there is no relaxation and separation in the abdominal muscles, the existing problems are eliminated with the mini tummy tuck method. The belly button is not affected by this procedure. Excess skin and fat that causes loosening, sagging, and cracking in the lower part of the belly button are removed, and the abdominal muscles, if any, are removed, thereby restoring the old tightness of the abdomen. General anesthesia is preferred in the operation, and it takes about 1.5 hours.

Before Abdominoplasty Operation

Tummy tuck, which takes at least 1, maximum 2 hours, carries various risks, as in other surgical steps. In order not to increase or even reduce the risks, it is essential for the patient to do their part. If we refer to the points to be considered before the operation; a fter the surgical operation is decided, an appointment is usually made three weeks later. For this reason, as soon as the decision is made, the use of blood thinning drugs such as aspirin, herbal teas, supplements, etc. should be terminated immediately. The use of all kinds of minerals, vitamins, multi-minerals, multi-vitamin drugs and nutritional supplements, including vitamins C, D, E, and K, should be terminated. Patients who decide to have surgery also consult painkillers that they can use when needed. Examples of these drugs are as follows; Novalgin - Paracematol. It is not recommended to use herbal teas containing green tea, all kinds of foods containing flaxseed, all liquids containing cherry stem, Coenzyme, Ginseng. Although you are a suitable candidate for tummy tuck surgery, if you are overweight, you may need to lose weight slowly before the operation. Three days before the day of surgery, you should stop all kinds of nutrients that may cause constipation and you should prefer food materials that are much easier to digest.

After Abdominoplasty Surgery

As in all surgical operations, some complications may be encountered after tummy tuck surgery. Among these complications, the most important ones are bleeding and infection. In order to minimize such risks, one should be very careful during the healing process, the medications prescribed by the doctor should be used regularly, the dressings should be done without interruption, and sudden movements should be avoided.
After the recovery period of tummy tuck surgery, patients are usually discharged after staying in the hospital for 1-2 days. The recovery process may vary depending on the scope of the operation and personal characteristics. Patients are asked to wear a special corset for about 1 month after the surgery. Thus, the desired form of the abdomen is achieved, and the success of the operation is increased. The scar formed at the incision site made during tummy tuck surgery is planned to remain inside the underwear. This scar begins to disappear within 2 months with a healthy healing process. Later, the trace becomes very indistinct.

Patients can stand up 3-4 hours after the operation and start walking with the help of a relative. It is possible to walk at a slow pace without any support on the next day of the surgery. During the operation, it is considered normal to feel pain for a short time due to the procedures applied to the abdomen and the stitches. At this stage, the use of simple painkillers prescribed by the doctor may be the solution.

After tummy tuck surgery, patients usually take a bath for 2-3 days and become able to do their routine work on their own. In the first week, the patient may get hurt during straining, sneezing, and coughing, since the stitches do not fully fuse yet. Since such actions are severe and may cause damage to the stitches, care should be taken as much as possible. Patients can usually return to work 7-10 days after the operation. However, this period may vary depending on the person's recovery process and working conditions. The recovery process of mini tummy tuck surgery is different, and the recovery time is usually shorter. For this reason, patients are usually able to return to work 4 days after the operation.

Tummy tuck is not a surgical procedure that affects a person's pregnancy. However, since a new pregnancy process will cause weight gain and some changes in the body, it is recommended that the patient undergo tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy. In this way, new sagging and cracks that may be caused by a new pregnancy and birth process will be eliminated.
