Hair Transplantation is the surgical method to treat acute irreparable hair loss or levels of alopecia in both genders.
It involves moving scalp hair and follicles from a dense donor area to the recipient area with baldness or thinning hair. They are removed by tube like punch graft or scalpel, and then transplanted into slits in bald areas of scalp.
Hair Loss is mainly a natural aging process or result from hereditary. But also can be caused by hormonal changes, certain medications, burns, illness or trauma or severe emotional stress. In any case, it affects a person’s appearance and self esteem seriously.
Fortunately, hair restoration surgeries are the solution for these annoying conditions.
After making the decision ;
Patient should meet with an expert surgeon to consult the type of the surgery.
Considering the person’s general physical and emotional health, expectation, and the procedure type most appropriate for the person; surgeon decides about the method of the hair transplantation surgery.
There are different hair transplantation techniques used in medical field. But the most common are ;
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)n
Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)
In FUT , hair has been harvested by a donor strip and dissected into follicular units
In FUE , follicular unit grafts can be removed directly from the back and side of the scalp.
DHI is kind of a developed FUE Method, with a special implanter with a hollow tube end to extract follicles and implant back to recipient area.
In FUT method, surgeon cut a strip of scalp from the back of the head with a scalpel, seperates the removed portion into small sections by a lens and surgical knife, and implant them to the recipient area. The cut on the donor area is closed with stitches.
In both FUE and DHI, follicular units are extracted from the donor area and implanted into the recipient are. Small holes are created by the surgeon with a needle on the recipient area where the follicles will be implanted, then the hair gently inserted in these holes.
Later on, a bandage or a gauze cover the scalp for a day or a couple of days.
According to the extent and complexity of the procedure, patients feelings and complaints may differ.
After the bandages are removed a day later, patient can wash his hair gently with a special shampoo.
Stitches will be removed around 10 days later.
Intense exercises and contact sports have to be avoided for three weeks.
Any possible swelling, bruising or drainage has to be consulted with the doctor.
